What Is the 999 Tax Plan - Can Herman Cain's Tax Plan Really Work?

Unless you have been living under a rock for the last month, you have probably heard about the Herman Cain 999 tax plan. What is the 999 tax plan? Can it really bring prosperity back to America and get people back to work? These are all questions that Republicans and Democrats alike are asking themselves as we get closer and closer to the GOP primary races and the Presidential election.

Trying to understand the current code is almost impossible. Only the best accountants can really explain the tax code in any way that is understandable. So what is the 999 tax plan? Let's establish how this plan works, and then we'll discuss if it will work for America.

9 % Business Flat Tax
Businesses are taxed at 9 %. Period. They are charged at 9% of gross income less any and all investments. They can deduct purchases made from other businesses. In addition, they can deduct dividends that are paid out to the shareholders of the company. This encourages businesses to pay out more money because it is a deduction.

9 % Individual Flat Tax
All individuals pay a 9 % flat tax on everything they own. They don't pay more if they make $250,000 per year. They don't pay more if they own a business that makes $250,000 per year. All individuals pay the same rate, so those people that don't pay any taxes now would pay taxes in the future. You could still deduct taxes for charitable donations. This would ensure that giving to charities is strongly encouraged.

9 % National Sales Tax
Everyone would pay a national sales tax on anything they buy. You would not be taxed on things you do not buy. Your taxes would not go to pay for Planned Parenthood funded abortions. If you want to buy a boat, you will pay a 9% sales tax on it.

Many people have asked if this would do away with the state sales tax. It has not been confirmed how this would work, but it appears that the 9 % national sales tax would not cancel out the state taxes. You would still pay a state sales tax.

What is the 999 Tax Plan? It is a 9 % business tax, a 9 % individual flat tax, and a 9 % national sales tax.

Under this scenario, we can see that those living in poverty and those living in the middle class will wind up paying more in taxes. There is no arguing this fact. The so-called "rich" people would pay less in taxes, so some people are not happy about this. My argument against this point is that companies will be paying MUCH less in taxes, so there would be a huge influx in new jobs to stimulate the economy. The people that are poor and unemployed will be able to afford the 9 % tax because they will actually have a job!

Contrary to the popular beliefs of those "evil" rich people, most companies don't just save all the extra money for their own pockets.

The biggest objection I have heard from conservatives is that this plan could be easily changed in the future so that the 9 9 9 plan could be changed to the 10 10 10 plan or 15 15 15 plan or whatever they want it to be. I would argue that liberals already want to raise taxes, and having a 999 plan isn't going to change their thirst for higher taxes. I think it would be harder to raise taxes because everyone would understand their taxes are going up.

Great character traits, exercised consistently, conscientiously, and properly, produce an individual of imposing worth. Imagine the joy of working under such a leader. Picture the harmony in a family led by such a man or woman. As a teacher, think of the many benefits you would reap in a classroom of students who manifested great character traits! What do I mean by great character traits?

Great character traits are absolute values that garner absolute results in terms of turning our society from the squalor of immorality to moral luxury.

Which Are They?

Choosing great character traits can be difficult. Read over a complete list and I think you will agree that not one moral value can be termed lowly and unimportant. All sixty-six qualify as great character traits. What happens, though, when you ask someone to list what they consider to be great character traits? What if you tried it where you work?

Many people are likely to lead off with respect and responsibility. They might rush to add integrity and trustworthiness, too, but then what?

Punctuality, diligence, and thoroughness are great character traits to have, aren't they? Think what a difference they make in work, whether we punch time-cards or spend our days at home. Most employers long for more evidence of those three qualities among their employees! Parents long to see children exercise those three, too.

Compassion, commitment, and cooperation are three more wonderful moral values. The exercise of compassion alleviates suffering of many kinds whenever it is applied. It creates a more humane society. Commitment, that old-fashioned quality that made a man's word his bond, is invaluable! As for cooperation, which of us would not like to be on the receiving end of that more often?

Self-control helps you and me exercise power over our tongues so that we don't gossip or use hurtful words to another person. It helps you and me exercise power over our anger, our appetites, and every facet of our beings. It surely qualifies as a magnificent moral value.

You see, it isn't easy to choose one quality over another. When we have sixty-six from which to choose, we may find it difficult to narrow it down to as few as thirty. Suppose we do, though. Suppose we sort through all of the high moral values we might build into our lives and come up with thirty that we consider more wonderful than the rest. Then we have another decision to make.

The Greatest of All

Which is the greatest of the many moral qualities we can build into our lives?

First let me acknowledge the runners-up: courage of convictions, faith, gentleness, goodness, joy, long suffering, meekness, peace, and temperance. All of those are among the top ten great character traits.

The greatest of great character traits is, however, love. If I exercise love toward another person, I will always do what is best for that other person, even if it requires personal sacrifice on my part. I don't have to like someone to exercise love. I don't have to have warm, fuzzy feelings or be romantically drawn to that person. I simply have to do what is best for him or her.

We can exercise responsibility and respect with all our might, but they are meaningless if we do not exercise love with them. We can have the courage of our convictions, show compassion to people, and exercise all-out commitment, but they don't work unless we link them with love.

Love is the greatest of all great character traits.

Conclusion

Great character traits abound. Each is splendid with potential. It's up to us - you and me - to study these qualities, build them into our lives, and exercise them to their fullest potential. If just one out of ten people did that, the positive change in society would be electrifying.

Sexual assault has affected our global society for well over 10,000 years. We allow predators to roam free in broad daylight and refuse to take any action to curtail their behavior. Quite often when a part of our society is in peril we rush to mend them, because it has a detrimental effect on the whole. Sadly, sexual assault, sexual harassment, physical abuse, and neglect against girls and women doesn't even get a nod.

"We are the only animal on the planet that repeatedly abuses and sexually assaults the smaller and weaker of the species for fun or sport. We have become a predatory global society that isn't willing to manage predatory behavior towards girls and women."

Why are sexual assault and the other predatory behaviors toward girls and women allowed to exist in an information rich global society? Listed below are some facts and a possible approach toward solutions to ending sexual assault.

One in five women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

Sexual violence is a global pandemic that has "NO" barriers.

Sexual violence is a devastating crime where self-esteem, self-worth, trust and confidence are destroyed. Physical and mental health complications arise and can continue throughout the victim's life. The capacity to hold down a job, support oneself and contribute productively to society is all undermined. Quality of life, health and happiness, autonomy and security are all damaged by sexual violence.

Sexual violence devastates individuals,families and communities. Distrust and fear permeates our communities and defines how members live amongst each other. We create a lesser community and a lesser society for all of us to live in.

Sexual violence is a travesty against the fundamental and inalienable Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Sexual violence against women reflects fundamental gender inequality and perpetuates it. A culture that doesn't value a woman's voice will have trouble respecting a woman's right to choose who or what she will engage in.

Violence against women cost the US public over $200 Billion annually.

Sexual violence is less likely to be reported, to be prosecuted, and to lead to conviction than other crimes. A crime which can't be successfully prosecuted is, in effect, a "Non-Crime". Society tacitly condones a "non-crime" as a crime with no punishment.

Sexual violence is an act of terrorism intended to create fear, perpetuate women's vulnerability, and therefore their inferiority

We can end sexual violence through real education about women's full and equal rights, respectful relationships, and real consequences for criminal behavior.To end this barbaric crime, victims must break their silence to bring these senseless assaults to an end. We have to believe as a society that we will no longer tolerate this behavior. Sexual assault has no place in our families, communities, and nation.

Budget Approved, Parade Begins But No Blossoms in Sight!

On Friday April 8th the US Federal Government officially ran out of money and many government offices started the process of shutting down. The most notable of these were public parks and monuments, the Passport Office and the annual Washington DC Cherry Blossom Parade scheduled for the very next day.

In the wee hours of Saturday morning a deal was struck to fund a temporary one week budget. This deal is based upon a general agreement of signing a final bill to fund the government for the remaining six months in the fiscal year sometime during the temporary one week extension.

In the end all the arguing and hoopla resulted in less than 1% in budget cuts.The results were so abysmal that not even the Cherry Blossoms showed for their parade. The news reporters are all blaming a late spring for the lack of pink fuzzy trees lining the parade route but for me this will always serve as metaphor for this ridiculous budget process.Still the floats and the marching bands proudly advance down the winter bare streets.

The parade on coverage on television is interrupted frequently to interview senators declaring victory and praising their own efforts in the budget process. Just like the parade I see no blossoms to back up their parade. We are a deadbeat nation borrowing to pay interest on the money we previously borrowed.

I suppose the good news is most of us will not live to see the tragic results of living on borrowed money. Most likely the implosion will not come for another thirty to maybe even fifty years so long as our lines of credit hold out. Eventually the risk of us defaulting on our debt will cause the rates we have to pay to borrow to skyrocket. To pay the higher rates the US will be forced to print and inject huge amounts of currency which will create a tidal wave of inflation.

This is not a secret and the politicians in Washington are all too aware of the dire situation. The problem is that elected officials simply cannot risk telling the truth and proposing real budget cuts that would jeopardize their reelection.Even the Tea Party has fallen victim to this. it is far easier to make campaign promises then it is to propose legislation that stops subsidy payments to those who elected you.

The answer lies in educating the American Public on fiscal responsibility. Once the public begins to understand the real numbers behind the deficit, we can begin to move in a direction to regain control. This means major cuts to all areas including Social Security and Medicare. In addition taxes and interest rates must be increased. Every American needs to know how to read basic financial statements and our federal, state and local governments should be required to issue simplified consolidated financial statements for public review.

By paying taxes we are investors in the US Government and as shareholders we need to actively participate in regaining profitability. Think about it!

Auto Industry Bailout - Is it Good For the US?

George W. Bush and Congress have worked together to "lend" up to $17.4 billion to GM, Chrysler and Ford. And all indications are that Barack Obama will increase the bailout by $40 billion. But is this auto industry bailout really good for the country? Let's take a quick look.

The primary reason bailout supporters give for it being necessary is that not bailing out the Big Three will cost the U.S. economy millions of jobs. The exact numbers are fuzzy, but it's not unreasonable to assume more than one million jobs would be lost as bankruptcies of the Big Three ripple through their supply chains.

Still, the entire debate over preserving jobs ignores the real problems. Why did the Big Three get into this tight spot in the first place, and how can they put themselves on a long-term path to health?

The current "credit crisis" in the U.S. (and the world) obscures the facts of the case. Yes, the crisis is bad-people don't have access to as much debt as they used to be able to use to spend money. But McDonald's is not going out of business. Neither is GE. And Amazon is doing fine, thank you very much.

Granted, most people use much higher amounts of debt to buy cars than they do to buy a Happy Meal. But the real issue is that the Big Three got themselves in a weakened state that makes the current crisis a life-or-death situation for them.

When we tell the truth, the Big Three makes products most American consumers don't want to buy (they'd rather buy Japanese cars instead), and sell those products at profit margins that don't compete. Why?

No matter where you come down in the UAW debate, there's no denying that paying union wages and paying union retirement benefits inflate the cost of Big Three auto production. There's debate about the true carrying cost of an active employee (it's probably not $73 an hour), but it's likely that benefits for current workers and retired workers bump the price of Big Three vehicles by $1,500 to $2,000 over what, say, Toyota has to spend.

It is tough to be competitive when you spot your opponents a couple grand per car. Honda and Nissan are making over $1,500 profit per car, and Chrysler and GM are losing about $500 per car.

So what is the bailout funding? Most Americans don't want to subsidize companies that don't sell a good product at a reasonable price. They also don't want to fund failing enterprises that have no hope of success. What we are really funding here is survival, and that's all. The bailout is supposed to keep the Big Three solvent until they can figure out what to do.

The problem is, they have not figured it out yet. Until they do, any bailout money we give them is essentially throwing money down a hole with no foreseeable bottom. That money might preserve jobs for a while (and most Americans think that's a good idea), but will it preserve them in the long run? Unlikely, because the employers do not have their act together.

My vacation to Peru started off like all my other vacations.....long plane ride. But let's not forget all the vaccinations and preventatives I had to have before I went. Vaccination for Yellow Fever, Malaria pills, and assorted other medications I took with me just in case. OK once a nurse always a nurse. I flew from Chicago to Miami then on to Lima Peru. A little bumpy, but landed in one piece. I waited in the Lima airport for my friends Maria and Kathy to come in on their flight. From the airport we went to a bed and breakfast in Lima. The next morning we started our adventure in Peru.

Peru is a land of forgotten temples entangled in jungle vines, cobwebbed imperial tombs baking in the desert sun and ancient treasures beyond reckoning. Wild rivers that rage around Cuzco, pumas that prowl in the night and shaman rituals that are centuries old. Even Inca warriors and Spanish conquistadors didn't stand a lasting in this wild terrain. No one could completely appreciate the terrain, from the dozens of peaks exceeding 5000m including Machu Picchu, down to the vast coastal deserts and the hot, steamy rainforests of the Amazon Basin. Peru will astound you with its diversity, from its countless indigenous peoples, languages and traditions to its rainbow variety of wildlife. Travel however and wherever the spirit moves you - a luxury lodge in the Amazon, cheap ceviche at a beachfront café or a panoramic train ride through the Andes - because it's all surprisingly affordable.

At one time Peru was the homeland of several prominent Andean civilizations, with the Incas certainly the most notable. The incredible Incas built astonishing mountain temples, palaces and other buildings, all with no mortar; they constructed almost 10,000 miles of roads; engineered functional bridges, and built aqueducts to transport their water. At the peak of the Inca's influence in 1532, the Spanish conquistadors arrived in their quest for gold and other riches; they executed the indigenous Indians and their leaders, captured their cities and in a brief period of time this innovative and powerful culture was scattered to the wind and all but destroyed. For almost three hundred years Peru functioned as a Spanish colony, but in the early 19th century native discontent and colonist revolts brought calls of independence, localized uprisings, and then, civil war in 1821, with the Spanish finally defeated in 1824. Over the next century, or so, Peru suffered through many wars, some with neighbors; brutal dictatorial rule, military coups and the subsequent political upheaval that comes with the territory.

After staying one night in Lima we started to Pisco. We took a bus and then transferred to a "collectivo". What is a collective? It is small minivans that you stick 7 people in with their luggage and oh yeah a bike. I was in the back of the "van" and had luggage on top of me. Luckily it was a short ride. Because we got friendly with the other in the van because of the close contact Maria picked up her first stray. We met a guy from England that was biking his way through South America. Since we told him we were see sites in Pisco and had a B&B that we were staying at he thought it would be fun to tag along. We got to our hotel and we got our rooms and met downstairs for some drinks. We were introduced to a Pisco Sour. It was like a Tom Collins but with a punch. We had a few drinks discussed our plans for the next day and decided it was time for bed.

The next day we took a tour to the cost line to see some of the sites. We were going to a beach where it rarely rained. Our tour guide said he doesn't remember it ever raining in his lifetime. This place looked like in never rained. Not a plant in sight. I don't remember even seeing any animals. Even though the ocean was right there it looked like the moon, desolate with no life. The desert and the sea come together in spectacular fashion in Paracas, in the department of Ica, just a few hours south from the city of Lima. The cliffs that fringe the beaches are teeming with life: millions of birds that live here year-round, and thousands of others that fly from the Northern Hemisphere and from further south, ranging from guano birds to Humboldt penguins. Next we were going to see a reserve. From there we took a boat to see the island game reserve. This was Guano Island. Yes, I said guano. This is from the birds nesting and using the island as a toilet.

Paracas National Reserve is a refuge for fur seals, Humboldt penguins, flamingos, and many other birds. You can visit many different natural and archeological attractions in the reserve. One of them is the El Candelabro, a geoglyph of more than 120 meters / 394 feet long, better appreciated from the ocean. The Punta Pejerrey, from where one can look out across the hillside at the candlestick-like figure of the Candelabro, carved into the sand with a similar technique to the Nazca Lines, although possibly of a different origin: theories range from pirates marking a treasure hiding place to soldiers fighting for Latin American independence from Spain. Ballestas Islands are located outside the reserve area. They constitute the habitat of a great variety of birds and sea lions, which you can approach by motor boat. This excursion is one of the most regular ones from Paracas. The next site we were scheduled to see is in Nazca.

As you view the coastal mountains that stretch across the arid flats to Nazca, you'd be forgiven for thinking that this desolate pampa holds little interest. This sun-bleached expanse was largely ignored by the outside world until 1939, when North American scientist Paul Kosok flew across the desert and noticed a series of extensive lines and figures etched below, which he initially took to be an elaborate pre-Inca irrigation system. What he had stumbled across was one of ancient Peru's most impressive and enigmatic achievements: the world-famous Nazca Lines. From a 12 meter / 39 feet lookout, you can partially observe the shapes of the hand and the tree. However, in order to appreciate the drawings fully, it is recommended to fly over the area in a small airplane. I did see the lines from the air. The plane was a small prop plane. It fit a total of 4. This was an exciting trip. I slid into the back seat behind the pilot. It was a tight fit. I was very nervous. While sitting in to back seat I noticed that the pilot had oxygen tubing and mask at his reach. I pointed that out to my friends and wondered why he was the only one to have oxygen and did we need it. He got in the plane after a quick check of the plane. As we started down the runway I wondered if we would get off ground, which of course we did. My stomach was a little jumpy and it was a good thing I took Dramamine before I went up in the plane.

Every time the pilot dipped the plane sideways to have a better look at the line I grabbed the seat like I was going to fall out of the plane. All I could say was, "yes I see you can fly straight now". He would tip to the side so much an alarm would go off in the plane. I kept telling the pilot he didn't have to do that I could see. All he would do was say, "It's OK.... Look!" Didn't stop me from grabbing the seat in front of me, which was the pilot's. It was my first time in a small plane (and not the last). It was an experience.

Today the small town of Nazca is continually inundated by travelers who show up to marvel and scratch their heads over the purpose of these mysterious lines, which were declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in 1994. Nasca Lines is a vast network of lines and drawings of animals and plants credited to the Nasca culture covering an area of approximately 350 km2 / 135 miles. Some of the best drawn figures are the hummingbird, the dog, the monkey, and the long-tailed mockingbird.

The German, Maria Reiche, devoted 50 years of her life to studying and researching the area and came to the conclusion that it was an astronomical calendar. Theories abound regarding these mysterious etchings, ranging from landing strips for aliens to a giant seismograph. The most probable theory is that of María Reiche, a German researcher who dedicated her life to studying the lines. Ms Reiche believed that the lines were part of a vast astronomic calendar whose figures marked different solar phases. Ms Reiche, affectionately nicknamed the Angel of the Plains by the local inhabitants, was the first to discover the ancient technique of digging into the tough and dry desert floor and covering the track with stones brought from distant sites. The component of natural plaster existing in the area helped to preserve for thousands of years the drawings: the hummingbird, the spider, the condor and the monkey, among the more than 30 figures etched into the plain.

The Nazca Lines are the most extraordinary legacy left by a culture that flourished in 300 BC. The Nazca culture is not believed to have been capable of manned flight. But the question remains as to how they crafted the drawings, what technology they used and what purpose the lines served.

Arequipa has been rocked by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes nearly every century since the Spanish arrived in 1540, Peru's second-largest city doesn't lack for drama. Arequipa has been called the White City. Its distinctive stonework graces the stately Plaza de Armas, along with countless beautiful colonial churches, monasteries and mansions scattered throughout the city.

What makes Peru's second-biggest city so irresistible is the obvious relish with which its citizens enjoy all the good things in life, especially the region's spicy food, stylish shopping and nightlife. The pulse of city life is upbeat. The streets are full of jostling vendors, bankers, artists, students and nuns. There's no better place in the south to rejuvenate your weary bones, especially while waiting a few days to acclimatize before scaling the higher elevations of Cuzco. One of the sites I ventured to was Colca Canyon.

Colca Canyon is a beautiful part of Peru offering stunning scenery and one of the best opportunities to see condors in the wild. Of course we took a bus to get there. We had to get up at 1am to catch the bus. It was a local bus. The bus had open windows and was backed with people and chickens. I did say it was a local bus. We were going up narrow mountain passes and the bus was going fast and you could feel it lean when turning the corners. I just tried to sleep so I would forget about the passageways. We finally got to the canyon and we got off the bus. There was no one there. Dawn was just starting to break. There were only a few people at this site. It was below freezing and we were not prepared for this weather. Before our bus left the open the luggage compartment under the bus. When it opened people started coming out with knit goods to sell. I thought I had a bad seat. Once the sun came up the condors came out. These were beautiful birds. It was a site to see and well worth the adventure getting there.

On the way to our next destination Cuzco, I had to take a bus. The ride was going to be four or five hours..... so I thought. I got to the bus station and our bus was running late so I waited. I waited two hours. I continually asked the man at the ticket counter if the bus was coming and he said, "yes, don't worry". It seems in many other counties transportation is not on time and no one is bothered by it. "Us Americans" worry too much... "Relax". Finally the bus reached the terminal. I got on the bus and looked forwarded to a restful trip. About half way into the trip the bus broke down. It broke down in a small town that had, luckily a cantina where we could get something to drink and eat. I had to wait for a replacement bus because the driver, after trying to fix the bus for an hour, could not fix the bus. The replacement bus was coming from the depot which is two hours away. I now had to stay in the cantina for hours with no running water for the bathrooms... you don't want to know what I had to use as the toilet, and we had no food left. It was about 40 degrees F and no heat for the open aired building. I waited and waited. I started having conversations with some of the local people and one family wanted me to take their son with was in his 20's home to America with me. The replacement bus arrived at the cantina around 3am. I hoped on the bus and hope for an uneventful finish to my road trip. I checked into our hotel a day late, but the room was still there for me.

The Andean city of Cuzco is the uneasy bearer of many grand titles. It was once the foremost city of the Inca empire, and is now the undisputed archaeological capital of the Americas, as well as the continent's oldest continuously inhabited city. Few travelers to Peru will skip visiting this premier South American destination, which is also the gateway to Machu Picchu. When I first got there I was short of breathe because of the altitude change. My thoughts were fuzzy. Even though my friend Maria was speaking to me is English I thought she was speaking Spanish. After some Coca Tea we were fine.

Although Cuzco was long ruled by an inca (king) or a Spanish conquistador, there's no question of who rules the roost in the 21st century: city life is almost totally at the whim of international tourists. These days nearly every building surrounding the historic Plaza de Armas seems to be a tourist hotel, restaurant, shop, travel agency or busy internet café.

As the heart of the once mighty Inca empire, the magnetic city of Cuzco heads the list of many a traveler's itinerary. Each year it draws hundreds of thousands of tourists to its cobbled streets, lured by the city's unique combination of colonial and religious splendors built on the hefty stone foundations of the Incas. And lying within easy hopping distance of the city is the country's biggest draw card of all, the 'lost' city of the Incas, Machu Picchu, and a lofty Inca citadel perched high on an isolated mountaintop.

The department of Cuzco boasts a long list of flamboyant fiestas and carnivals in which the nation's proud pagan past collides colorfully with solemn Catholic rituals and modern Latin American mayhem. And in no other place in Peru can you descend from the breath¬taking altitudes of Andean peaks down through cloud forests painted with rare orchids to the lush lowlands of the Amazon jungle so quickly. Corpus Christi is a festival in May - June in the Cusco Region. This festival is a celebration of the saints. Fifteen saints and virgins from different Cusco districts arrive at the cathedral in procession to salute Christ's body in the form of a consecrated wafer kept in the fabulous 26-kg massif gold custody. During the night wake, typical dishes, such as chiriuchu (guinea pig and hot peppers), chicha and corn bread, are served. As soon as the sun rises, the parade starts around the main square, and then the images enter the cathedral to salute each other. Finally, the delegations go back to their churches in the midst of songs and prayers. The celebration last a week.

For many visitors to Peru and even South America, a visit to the lost Inca city of Machu Picchu is the sweet cherry on the top of their trip. With its spectacular location, it's the best-known archaeological site on the continent. This awe-inspiring ancient city was never revealed to the conquering Spaniards and was virtually forgotten until the early part of the 20th century. In the high season from late May until early September, the maximum limit of 2500 people arrive daily. Despite this great tourist influx, the site manages to retain its air of grandeur and mystery, and is a must for all visitors to Peru. Because of the higher elevation I was out of breath again. It took me a while to get used to that. Once you saw the view you forgot about everything else. Truly picturesque. This is not a site to be missed.

A vast region of tropical vegetation in the Amazon River Basin, home to Peru's largest natural reserves. The vast Peruvian jungle, which surrounds the wide and winding Amazon river, is divided into two differentiated areas: the cloud forest, which features a subtropical, balmy climate, with heavy rain showers between November and March, and sunny days from April to October; and the lowland jungle, where the dry season runs from April to October and is ideal for tourism, with sunshine and high temperatures often topping 35°C.

I spent 4 days in the Amazon Jungle. To get there it was time for another plane but it was an 8 seat plane this time. We flew in to the jungle and landed in a small field in the middle of the trees. After we landed we met our tour guide and canoed on the river to our camp. We had huts with and part time plumbing and electricity by generator. We woke up early every morning to go on our walking tours. We were told to make sure we had our insect netting tucked in well before we went to bed. I didn't want any unwanted guests in bed so I prepared my bed in the day light. I was also told that when I woke in the morning I should tap the netting first then take the flash light and scan the area around the bed and my shoes then get out of bed. Just in case a snake decided to visit. On night we slept outside on a deck along the river to view animals at night. We had sleeping bags and the "bathroom" was down the path along the river but we had to watch for animals, jaguars. I stopped drinking fluids when I heard that. Didn't see much.... to dark.

We saw many animals and it was amazing. The jungle features high humidity all year long. In the southern jungle, there are sometimes cold spells known locally as friajes or surazos, cold fronts which drift up from the far south of the continent between May and August, where temperatures can drop low at night. During this season, the river levels dip and roads are easy to drive. The rainy season, meanwhile, which runs from November to March, features frequent rain showers which can damage roads in the area. I met some wonderful people in the Amazon and will never forget my experience.

Inca Kola National Soft Drink of Peru is a yellowish color and bubble gum taste. This was my favorite drink when I was there. Peruvians are proud of their national soft drink and look forward to enjoying it when they return to Peru from abroad. What is that strange yellow beverage everyone is drinking? It's the first question a Peruvian food newbie asks when confronted with Peru's ubiquitous soda: Inca Kola. It's a drink people either love or hate, but personal preferences aside, it has an interesting history in the annals of the global carbonated beverage world. It really is the tale of the little cola that could. What many may not know is that the extremely sweet and brightly yellow, very bright, soda is one of just a handful of locally produced colas in the world that was never able to be beaten by the world's number one soft drink: Coca-Cola. Despite years of trying to dominate the Peruvian market, Coca-Cola finally gave up and decided it had to buy a share of Inca Kola because it simply couldn't outsell it.

Inca Kola, there is only one, unlike any other. Peruvians love their Inca Kola. There is a sense of pride that a soda in a small, poor country was not able to be overtaken by the most important beverage company in the world. Fast-food restaurants like the Peruvian company Bembo's switched from Coke to Inca Kola, and even McDonald's, yes I had my Inca Cola at McDonalds, had to come to a unique agreement with Coca-Cola to allow both beverages to be sold in its restaurants, something unheard of in the fast-food restaurant industry. Inca Kola was like the persistent lover that had come into the marriage between McDonald's and Coca-Cola. In Peru, Big Macs are eaten with Inca Kola, not Coke.

Economics - Psychology's Neglected Branch

Economics - to the great dismay of economists - is merely a branch of psychology. It deals with individual behaviour and with mass behaviour. Many of its practitioners sought to disguise its nature as a social science by applying complex mathematics where common sense and direct experimentation would have yielded far better results.

The outcome has been an embarrassing divorce between economic theory and its subjects.

The economic actor is assumed to be constantly engaged in the rational pursuit of self interest. This is not a realistic model - merely a useful approximation. According to this latter day - rational - version of the dismal science, people refrain from repeating their mistakes systematically. They seek to optimize their preferences. Altruism can be such a preference, as well.

Still, many people are non-rational or only nearly rational in certain situations. And the definition of "self-interest" as the pursuit of the fulfillment of preferences is a tautology.

The theory fails to predict important phenomena such as "strong reciprocity" - the propensity to "irrationally" sacrifice resources to reward forthcoming collaborators and punish free-riders. It even fails to account for simpler forms of apparent selflessness, such as reciprocal altruism (motivated by hopes of reciprocal benevolent treatment in the future).

Even the authoritative and mainstream 1995 "Handbook of Experimental Economics", by John Hagel and Alvin Roth (eds.) admits that people do not behave in accordance with the predictions of basic economic theories, such as the standard theory of utility and the theory of general equilibrium. Irritatingly for economists, people change their preferences mysteriously and irrationally. This is called "preference reversals".

Moreover, people's preferences, as evidenced by their choices and decisions in carefully controlled experiments, are inconsistent. They tend to lose control of their actions or procrastinate because they place greater importance (i.e., greater "weight") on the present and the near future than on the far future. This makes most people both irrational and unpredictable.

Either one cannot design an experiment to rigorously and validly test theorems and conjectures in economics - or something is very flawed with the intellectual pillars and models of this field.

Neo-classical economics has failed on several fronts simultaneously. This multiple failure led to despair and the re-examination of basic precepts and tenets.

Consider this sample of outstanding issues:

Unlike other economic actors and agents, governments are accorded a special status and receive special treatment in economic theory. Government is alternately cast as a saint, seeking to selflessly maximize social welfare - or as the villain, seeking to perpetuate and increase its power ruthlessly, as per public choice theories.

Both views are caricatures of reality. Governments indeed seek to perpetuate their clout and increase it - but they do so mostly in order to redistribute income and rarely for self-enrichment.

Economics also failed until recently to account for the role of innovation in growth and development. The discipline often ignored the specific nature of knowledge industries (where returns increase rather than diminish and network effects prevail). Thus, current economic thinking is woefully inadequate to deal with information monopolies (such as Microsoft), path dependence, and pervasive externalities.

Classic cost/benefit analyses fail to tackle very long term investment horizons (i.e., periods). Their underlying assumption - the opportunity cost of delayed consumption - fails when applied beyond the investor's useful economic life expectancy. People care less about their grandchildren's future than about their own. This is because predictions concerned with the far future are highly uncertain and investors refuse to base current decisions on fuzzy "what ifs".

This is a problem because many current investments, such as the fight against global warming, are likely to yield results only decades hence. There is no effective method of cost/benefit analysis applicable to such time horizons.

How are consumer choices influenced by advertising and by pricing? No one seems to have a clear answer. Advertising is concerned with the dissemination of information. Yet it is also a signal sent to consumers that a certain product is useful and qualitative and that the advertiser's stability, longevity, and profitability are secure. Advertising communicates a long term commitment to a winning product by a firm with deep pockets. This is why patrons react to the level of visual exposure to advertising - regardless of its content.

Humans may be too multi-dimensional and hyper-complex to be usefully captured by econometric models. These either lack predictive powers or lapse into logical fallacies, such as the "omitted variable bias" or "reverse causality". The former is concerned with important variables unaccounted for - the latter with reciprocal causation, when every cause is also caused by its own effect.

These are symptoms of an all-pervasive malaise. Economists are simply not sure what precisely constitutes their subject matter. Is economics about the construction and testing of models in accordance with certain basic assumptions? Or should it revolve around the mining of data for emerging patterns, rules, and "laws"?

On the one hand, patterns based on limited - or, worse, non-recurrent - sets of data form a questionable foundation for any kind of "science". On the other hand, models based on assumptions are also in doubt because they are bound to be replaced by new models with new, hopefully improved, assumptions.

One way around this apparent quagmire is to put human cognition (i.e., psychology) at the heart of economics. Assuming that being human is an immutable and knowable constant - it should be amenable to scientific treatment. "Prospect theory", "bounded rationality theories", and the study of "hindsight bias" as well as other cognitive deficiencies are the outcomes of this approach.

To qualify as science, economic theory must satisfy the following cumulative conditions:

All-inclusiveness (anamnetic) - It must encompass, integrate, and incorporate all the facts known about economic behaviour.

Coherence - It must be chronological, structured and causal. It must explain, for instance, why a certain economic policy leads to specific economic outcomes - and why.

Consistency - It must be self-consistent. Its sub-"units" cannot contradict one another or go against the grain of the main "theory". It must also be consistent with the observed phenomena, both those related to economics and those pertaining to non-economic human behaviour. It must adequately cope with irrationality and cognitive deficits.

Logical compatibility - It must not violate the laws of its internal logic and the rules of logic "out there", in the real world.

Insightfulness - It must cast the familiar in a new light, mine patterns and rules from big bodies of data ("data mining"). Its insights must be the inevitable conclusion of the logic, the language, and the evolution of the theory.

Aesthetic - Economic theory must be both plausible and "right", beautiful (aesthetic), not cumbersome, not awkward, not discontinuous, smooth, and so on.

Parsimony - The theory must employ a minimum number of assumptions and entities to explain the maximum number of observed economic behaviours.

Explanatory Powers - It must explain the behaviour of economic actors, their decisions, and why economic events develop the way they do.

Predictive (prognostic) Powers - Economic theory must be able to predict future economic events and trends as well as the future behaviour of economic actors.

Prescriptive Powers - The theory must yield policy prescriptions, much like physics yields technology. Economists must develop "economic technology" - a set of tools, blueprints, rules of thumb, and mechanisms with the power to change the " economic world".

Imposing - It must be regarded by society as the preferable and guiding organizing principle in the economic sphere of human behaviour.

Elasticity - Economic theory must possess the intrinsic abilities to self organize, reorganize, give room to emerging order, accommodate new data comfortably, and avoid rigid reactions to attacks from within and from without.

Many current economic theories do not meet these cumulative criteria and are, thus, merely glorified narratives.

But meeting the above conditions is not enough. Scientific theories must also pass the crucial hurdles of testability, verifiability, refutability, falsifiability, and repeatability. Yet, many economists go as far as to argue that no experiments can be designed to test the statements of economic theories.

It is difficult - perhaps impossible - to test hypotheses in economics for four reasons.

Ethical - Experiments would have to involve human subjects, ignorant of the reasons for the experiments and their aims. Sometimes even the very existence of an experiment will have to remain a secret (as with double blind experiments). Some experiments may involve unpleasant experiences. This is ethically unacceptable.

Design Problems - The design of experiments in economics is awkward and difficult. Mistakes are often inevitable, however careful and meticulous the designer of the experiment is.

The Psychological Uncertainty Principle - The current mental state of a human subject can be (theoretically) fully known. But the passage of time and, sometimes, the experiment itself, influence the subject and alter his or her mental state - a problem known in economic literature as "time inconsistencies". The very processes of measurement and observation influence the subject and change it.

Uniqueness - Experiments in economics, therefore, tend to be unique. They cannot be repeated even when the SAME subjects are involved, simply because no human subject remains the same for long. Repeating the experiments with other subjects casts in doubt the scientific value of the results.

The undergeneration of testable hypotheses - Economic theories do not generate a sufficient number of hypotheses, which can be subjected to scientific testing. This has to do with the fabulous (i.e., storytelling) nature of the discipline.

In a way, economics has an affinity with some private languages. It is a form of art and, as such, it is self-sufficient and self-contained. If certain structural, internal constraints and requirements are met - a statement in economics is deemed to be true even if it does not satisfy external (scientific) requirements. Thus, the standard theory of utility is considered valid in economics despite overwhelming empirical evidence to the contrary - simply because it is aesthetic and mathematically convenient.

So, what are economic "theories" good for?

Economic "theories" and narratives offer an organizing principle, a sense of order, predictability, and justice. They postulate an inexorable drive toward greater welfare and utility (i.e., the idea of progress). They render our chaotic world meaningful and make us feel part of a larger whole. Economics strives to answer the "why's" and "how's" of our daily life. It is dialogic and prescriptive (i.e., provides behavioural prescriptions). In certain ways, it is akin to religion.

In its catechism, the believer (let's say, a politician) asks: "Why... (and here follows an economic problem or behaviour)".

The economist answers:

"The situation is like this not because the world is whimsically cruel, irrational, and arbitrary - but because ... (and here follows a causal explanation based on an economic model). If you were to do this or that the situation is bound to improve".

The believer feels reassured by this explanation and by the explicit affirmation that there is hope providing he follows the prescriptions. His belief in the existence of linear order and justice administered by some supreme, transcendental principle is restored.

This sense of "law and order" is further enhanced when the theory yields predictions which come true, either because they are self-fulfilling or because some real "law", or pattern, has emerged. Alas, this happens rarely. As "The Economist" notes gloomily, economists have the most disheartening record of failed predictions - and prescriptions.

Spirituality can be understood as the knowledge of a reality that lies beyond the physical self and forms the very core of the physical beings. A spiritual person goes into the fundamental cause or source of all material reality which can not be seen or felt.

All living realities consist of a body and a soul or the spark of spirit. While bodies are distinct and changing every moment, the spirit is eternal and same in all. Thus the mind of a spiritual person is still and experiences peace and happiness while the mind of a material person is turbulent and experiences pleasure and pain.

All human beings are born spiritual as Jesus said, "Man does not live by bread alone". No man can be happy merely by satisfying the body like other animals. He has to satisfy his soul to live. All the happiness and joy in the life of man comes only from the satisfaction of body and soul. While the satisfaction of body is temporary as it lasts only for a while, the satisfaction of soul is lasting which brings permanent happiness and joy in the life of man.

Thus spirituality is the true indication of the happiness of a person.

The Intelligence Quotient (IQ)

Scientists have developed many methods to measure the Intelligence of a person, calling it the Intelligence Quotient (IQ). IQ has been widely used by the universities to select the student for the graduate courses. The tests like GRE or SAT measures the intelligence of the student. IQ is also an important criteria adopted by corporate to select their employees as they have learned from their experience that people with high IQ have better ability to solve problems.

It has also been established by many studies that people of high IQ are more successful in their professional and personal lives.

Yet there is no guarantee the people of high IQ must also be happier in their life than the less intelligent people as happiness comes from within and does not depend on the material success of the person in this world.

The happiness of the person does not depend on his IQ but depends only on his spiritual Quotient (SQ).

The Spiritual Quotient

Spirituality of a person is difficult to measure just like happiness. The reason is that while the body and mind of the person can be seen or measured, the spirit can not be measured by any instrument.

However, every person knows his spirit which is the source of his thoughts, believes and emotions. Hence he can knows himself for sure the truth of his soul.

Spirituality is not measurable by the actions of the person. One can go to Church or temple every day without believing God at all. There is no method to measure beliefs, truths and love. One can also fool the world by doing action and speaking words contrary to his thoughts and believes.

Hence one has to be absolutely honest in answering the questions for the SQ Test as it if for the Self and not for others. No material benefits can accrue by getting high SQ score.

Remember, you can fool all people in the world but you can never fool yourself.

So be honest while measuring your own SQ as high SQ is an indication of your lasting happiness. You clues of high SQ is hidden in the test itself, which can always be used to increase SQ and achieve more permanent happiness in life.

Spiritual Quotient Test

Answer the following questions truthfully.

There are five answers of each question. The answers and the marks assigned are as following

1. Absolutely True (10 marks)
2. Very True (8 marks)
3. Partially True (6 marks)
4. Probably True (4 marks)
5. Rarely True (2 marks)

Q1: I believe that God is One.

Q2: I believe that God is formless and present in all beings.

Q3: I love all people and feel compassion for all living being.

Q4: I earn enough to live a comfortable life and I do not like to accumulate wealth

Q5: I am happy being myself and do not seek power.

Q6: I respect my parents and elders.

Q7: I seek good for all and I do not like violence.

Q8: I always speak Truth.

Q9: I love my spouse and do not intend to commit adultery.

Q10: I always deal with people in a way I would have like to be dealt myself.

Add all your score and your Spiritual Quotient. The higher is your score, the more spiritual you are in your life and more permanent is your happiness and joy in the life.

In order to know how these questions measure spirituality, we have to understand the essence of spirituality.

The Essence of Spirituality

The ten questions to measure SQ are not really different from each other but may be treaded as the braches of the same tree as a spiritual person sees unity in all diversities in this universe.

The detailed analysis of the questions would reveal that they all emanates from the same spirit which is fundamental and eternal as explained in following paras.

(I) God is One

Every religion gives a different name for the God. God is known in different religions as Yahweh, Christ, Allah, Krishna, Ram, Shiva, Buddha, Mother etc. He is also referred as Supreme, Energy, Spirit, Love by nonreligious person. All scriptures provide a different name and description of God. Thus for an ordinary person, all religions are different and all Gods are different.

However a spiritual person knows that they all refer to the same God as there can not be multiple Gods based on the faith of the person.

(II) God is An Omnipresent Spirit

Most people understand God by some form. Some people worship the idols of God in their temple or churches. Others consider the words of God as sacrosanct. However, one who sees God in Idols or forms can never be spiritual as no two idols can be same. A typical temple of Hindu is inhabited by several Gods or Goddess like Krishna, Rama, Kali, Shiva etc. Even Christianity believe in the Trinity of God i.e. God the Father, God the Son (Christ) and Holy Spirit. Judaism and Islam believe in the Oneness of God. Yet there are major differences in the description of God.

Thus it is not easy to comprehend God as One unless one uses intuition and imagination. If God is One, then He can never be described by words and Forms for the simple reason that they all represents a specific concept of divinity which is limited which God is eternal and omnipresent. He has to be a Spirit or Energy which is present in all creations. A spiritual person therefore sees the same God in every person irrespective of his religion, race or nationality due to His presence in all.

(III) Love All Beings

A spiritual person sees God in all including himself. Hence everyone automatically becomes an extension of the self. Thus he loves every person as the self. However, a material person sees himself different from others, his religion different from others, his nation different from others or his race different from others. Therefore, he can never love others as the self. All distinction leads to hatred as no two people can think alike or do identical things. Thus one can easily know the level of his spiritual growth by just observing how many people he loves.

If one can love every one including his enemies, he is truly a spiritual person.

(IV) Wealth is A Means Only

While most people are longing to earn as much wealth as they can and live a life or comfort and luxury, a spiritual person sees wealth only as a means to attain God. He lives not to eat but eat only to live. Once his basic necessities are satisfied, he does not want to accumulate wealth. One can never be materialistic and spiritual at the same time.

A seeker of God does not go after wealth.

(V) Hate Power

The concept of individual power runs quite contrary to the spiritual world. It is well said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupt absolutely. Individual power always challenges the power of God. The universe is perfect in itself as anything that is created by God has to be perfect. However, due to the limitation of our knowledge, we often find the world as imperfect and try to make it perfect by the use of force. Most of us have limited power; hence we use it only in our family or dependents. Yet one who has more power uses it against a large number of people. However, it is seen from experience that all such attempts of changing the world by force has finally failed as unlimitedly only the Truth or God wins.

(VI) Respect Parents

Man is brought into this world from the flesh and blood of his parents. Parents also play the most important role in bring up the child and make him stand on his own feet. However, when parents become weak and needs the support of their children, often children ditch them. For a material person, it does not make any sense to return the favour to their parents as the parents can never pay back the favour again. However, a spiritual person always respects their parents as his very existence came from them. He feels obliged to feed the source that created them at the first place.

Respecting parents is a sign of gratitude and humility. One who is not grateful to his parents, can not be grateful to God or his Creator.

(VII) Nonviolence

Violence is the easiest method to get results. The policy of "an eye for an eye" is as old as the civilization itself. However, violence always leads to more violence. The root cause of violence is due to the separateness one feels with the others. If a person feels that everyone is created from the same spirit and have the same God, he can never resort to violence not only in deeds but even in thoughts. You can never use violence against yourself however wrong you have done. You are always able to find some reason and some justification for all your acts

(VIII) Truth is God

Truth is the most important character of a spiritual person as Truth is one of the manifestations of God. God like Truth is eternal and omnipresent. While materialistic people are always driven by their desire to accumulate wealth and changes the course of life based on the tide of the flow, the spiritual person can never discard truth for the sake of anything in this world. Truth is always consistent with God and it is Truth that creates faith and trust.

(IX) Adultery is Sensuous

Coveting the spouse or wealth of other is the sure manifestation of the enslavement of the person to his senses and the body. Adultery is unacceptable to a spiritual person it amount to cheating to the spouse for the sake of sensual pleasure. For the spiritual person, nothing is as important as having the faith and trust of the partner. He can not have faith in the God if he fails to have faith of his spouse.

(X) The Golden Rule

Treating others as one would like others to treat him is the most natural action of all spiritual people as they do not distinguish between self and others. Even if they wish, they can not treat others as any different from their own selves.

Spirituality Brings Happiness

Spirituality is often associated with other worldliness. Nothing can be farther from truth. A Spiritual person goes beyond the body and discovers the true force of the body. Thus he understands the cause and effect of the world more accurately than any scientist. As a scientist can prevent mishaps by predicting weather and cyclones, the spiritual person avoids pain and misery by his better understands of the world. He earns the trust and faith of the people by his selfless service to them and by trusting them. Thus the Spiritual Quotient of a person measures the spirituality or the non-material nature of the person which truly reflects the quotient of his happiness and joy.

Various finance measures have been implemented since the beginning of the worldwide economic crisis - most aimed largely at revitalizing dying businesses and corporations hit hardest by the repercussions. Many people have just a fuzzy idea of what the whole fuss is all about, but most of us would agree that the crisis that has exploded has had tremendous influence and effects at almost every level. Listening to the news during the height of the initial stages probably felt a little unreal, as the big, famous corporations once thought to be invincible were all suddenly declaring bankruptcy and loss.

These reports usually involve numbers and sums of money so large as to defy imagination: millions, billions, and even trillions of dollars seemed to be getting thrown around willy-nilly. The truth is, although over the course of a normal day we might not realize it, the functioning of economies and financial systems involve the trading of large and even larger amounts of currency. They only attracted the spotlight and public attention (and perhaps caused confusion) once critical levels were reached, enough for the normally distant economic sphere to intersect with that of daily life. But the first thing to realize is that the movement of such seemingly unreal amounts is, in fact, well within the normal working conditions of the market.

Now, with that out of the way, the next question would probably be what was the cause of the entire crisis anyway? What was that initial mistake or flaw or fall or "first domino" that triggered the whole tragic landslide? This is a difficult question with no simple answer. If you have been somewhat keeping up with the news, terms such as subprime mortgages and collateralized debt obligations might sound familiar. Explaining in detail the various financial constructs and processes that are involved would be a little too much, but essentially, it all boiled down to good old-fashioned greed.

The financial market revolves around the use and investment of so-called capital or money. Investors and the brokers that represent them always aim to maximize their profits while minimizing losses, all the while tolerating some moderate value of risk, depending on the parties involved. As it happened, the economy grew, and investors came to have large amounts of capital. Hence, the demand for investments also grew, especially those with high rates of return. Bankers and other financial institutions gladly created just such investments by transferring the risk on mortgages. Long story short, when the mortgages were not paid off, as they were bound to be, the whole house of cards collapsed, and many firms found themselves grinding to a halt.

The massive injections of capital therefore aim to increase liquidity, or to stimulate once again the movement of money that constitutes a properly functioning economy. These and other such finance measures are unfortunately not surefire ways to deal with the system wide crash. Still, they represent the best efforts of some of our most esteemed economic minds and powerful figures, and we can only wait and hope for the best.

Why TV Is So Boring

Let me begin by saying something that might sound totally fatuous to some people. Here goes. As times and circumstances change, so do various fields of human activity.

Wow, that's deep. Good job, Ruggero.

Well, anyway, no matter how productive or lucrative a field was when it first hatched, when the conditions that brought it to life evolve or devolve, it must either adapt or vanish.

Abandoning the idea of the "philosopher's stone" (a legendary substance supposedly capable of turning inexpensive metals into gold), alchemy blended itself into ordinary chemistry. Astrology separated itself as far as possible from astronomy when the latter, due mostly to the invention of the telescope, became thoroughly materialistic, discarding the spiritual aspect of the Universe's structure as something it had no use for. And so forth. (The new "philosopher's stone," a.k.a. "alternative fuels," is really a combination of two ideas: turning trash into energy and launching a perpetual motion machine (the kind that produces more energy than it uses, another dream inherited from medieval inventors). Ideas change their appearance, but hardly ever their essence).

Television as we know it (not the tube itself, but rather the broadcasting industry) dates back to the 1950's, when the main purpose of advertising was to announce products rather than splice their brand names onto the human psyche. We have come a long way since then. Only a few products can be advertised in prime time today. Cars; pharmaceuticals (including dental products and shampoo, i.e. stuff you buy at the drugstore); junk food; new movies; cell phones, lawyer services; and insurance. Gone from your evening TV experience are department stores, appliances, coffee, music, and painting collections. Ah, the time when you could catch a commercial touting a huge sale on Manet or Sargent originals! Those were the days.
But I digress.

Even back in the 1950's, some folks cynically suggested that television was an advertising medium, and that the actual programming served only to fill the gaps between commercials. That was not true back than; nor is it true today. The reason television performs fellatio is far more prosaic, alas.

The current model for TV broadcasting consists of two layers of pseudo-advertising, and nothing else. The first layer, i.e. the actual programming (shows, concerts, movies, news) serves to get the viewer's attention. The second layer, the "commercials," does not actually try to sell anything (in prime time, they run up to eight car ads an hour - how many cars can an average viewer possibly buy in the course of just one day, goodness - how often does he or she actually buy a car? Once in two or three or five years? At four hours of TV per day, and a brand-new car every three years (quite a stretch) - that comes out to 35,040 (thirty-five thousand and forty) car ads between purchases!). Rather, the "commercial" layer tries (successfully so, we must admit) to keep viewers' minds in car-buying mode all the time.
The studios pay for the shows, and the advertisers pay the studios. The actual viewer is kept out of the loop.

This may be a wonderful (and witty) solution for providing free entertainment for the public, only there is no such thing as free lunch (case in point: the philosopher's stone enterprise and perpetual motion research still have to yield any results). The studios have no choice but to bring the overall quality of the programming to the lowest common denominator in order to get as many folks as possible to watch TV. The model has no provision for the specialized interests of some viewers, niche programming, demographic-oriented programming. A show that could potentially attract fewer than a million viewers (roughly speaking) gets rejected more or less automatically.
Cable was expected to balance out the "dumb-down" factor by making the viewer pay actual money for the packages he or she purchased. The model used by cable television, however, differs but little from traditional TV. The viewer pays a ridiculously small monthly sum and is served a whole bunch of channels featuring shows that are not of the viewer's choosing. The quality is only marginally better than that of the big networks. As an acquaintance of mine once put it, "There's 500 channels and nothing to watch."

The crux of the matter is that both models are essentially anti-free-enterprise and, in the final count, stubbornly and aggressively un-American. Which is a shame, of course, since modern technology can easily make television a truly wonderful source of quality entertainment for everyone, and not just the "masses." Yes, there is a way to make TV perform fellatio less, and do some quality work for the good of the American people.

What I'm going to say now may sound nearly unthinkable, and even ridiculous, to some taxpayers and voters out there. It is nevertheless true.

Here goes. It is the Federal Government's job to rescue television from the clutches of corporate-sponsored, watered-down socialism.

Remember that like land, air, and water, airtime belongs to the nation, and not just a few faceless corporate entities. Remember also that public space (and airtime certainly qualifies as public space) is subject to government regulation. No one should tell anyone how to run a business; and yet legitimate businesses are run in accordance with laws, and laws are made by the Legislative Branch.

False advertisement is an actionable offence, and yet this law is openly disdained by the current TV model. The networks claim they provide knowledge (the news and History Channel) and entertainment (everything else), while in reality they provide nothing apart from advertising. Our technologically advanced epoch, so different from the 1950's, calls for a new Federal law that would effectively ban companies from generating income by selling anything other than their own product.

Clothing companies sell clothes; farmers sell produce; landlords sell living and office space. TV pretends to sell knowledge and entertainment to the viewer, whereas it really is in the business of selling public airtime to a handful of corporations.

To summarize.

TV performs fellatio because it is impossibly, insufferably, criminally boring.
TV is boring because the current model of television programming is not conducive to making entertaining broadcasts.

The current model is not conducive to making television entertaining because it is rooted in an epoch that from today's point of view seems prehistoric; because that model was fallacious to begin with when it was first hatched; because it fails to take any advantage of the superlative, unprecedented technological means available today. Palm reading is more technologically advanced than television, for goodness' sake.

Suppose you were a farmer, growing strawberries and spinach. Suddenly a middleman comes over to you to buy out, or even just claim, your field and crops, with the idea of turning it over to a corporation specializing in genetically modified corn. You have no say in the matter; as a consolation, you are allowed to visit the field for free any time you like.

But, you might ask, how would the networks make money if they weren't allowed to air commercials?

Simple. The American way, that's how. Create a product; announce it; hope and pray that someone would buy it; and charge for it when they do.

As a matter of fact, the model already exists, even though it could use a lot of improvement. It is called pay-per-view.
The way it looks, the only way to bring television up to date achieve this would be to ban all advertising from it, forever. Consider that cigarette commercials were banned because they endangered public health. All advertising on TV should be banned because advertising-sponsored "shows" are a hazard to the public psyche. The current model has had its day, and it is time to toss it into the dusty, malodorous pile of historical trash.

What would television be like, with advertising banned? Who knows. Some heavy-duty deregulation would probably be in order. Anti-trust laws (the latest signed by George W. Bush in 2002) would have to be applied to it. Limits would have to be set on how much public airtime a company can get - three hours? Four hours? And electronic tracking system (meters) would have to be installed (a TV set would become much like a cell phone, and simpler than the current pay-per-view format - get an account, pay for how much you watch, pay only for what you watch on a show by show basis; no bulk discounts). The revenues would then be electronically distributed among the appropriate providers of content.

Competition (real competition) would do the rest.

The debilitating, mind-numbing effect the current model has on the population would be eliminated forever. Remember your favorite show - sitcom, talk show, news, whatever - that you sometimes feel a bit guilty watching, thinking there must be better, more constructive ways of spending your time, and paying for the mildly stimulating, soft content with having to endure the boredom and annoyance of "commercial" interruptions. Imaging that instead of boredom and annoyance you had to use real money. No more ads. The show goes on, uninterrupted. How much would you pay for it - the one show you watch three or five times a week? Three dollars a pop? Five dollars? Five hours of TV a day, every day, would then amount to $168, or thereabouts, a week. No one in their right mind would pay that kind of money to just watch TV as we know it, or any kind of TV for that matter. Parents would instantly find a thousand infallible ways of keeping their children away from the tube. Strict TV budgeting would enforce itself in every household (with the exception of very wealthy households which, even today, are not sufficiently numerous to make any difference in the matter). The ratings (the real ratings, measured in actual dollars rather than fuzzy numbers extrapolated from flimsy telephonic polls) would start falling so fast and so hard that studios would have to start finding ways to improve their product dramatically in order to be able to stay in business. The precious three or four hours of TV a week would have to become worth the viewer's while. (The studios would discover real quick that American audiences are by far not as dumb as everybody used to think).

So - no free TV of any kind?

None.

What about PBS?

Look. Some kind of nominal fee would have to be paid by the viewer, even when the studio does not want to charge him - remember your cell phone?

All right, here's a problem. Some big companies might definitely figure out a way to do some subtle product placement in exchange for "donations" or even "investment." What do we do about that? That's pretty simple, actually. That's why we have the FCC.

Bars would be first to benefit from the change. They always do. Changes drive people to drink. Apart from that, some bars would probably enjoy a measure of success for a while. They would pay viewer's fees, and their TV's would stay on, and some folks who used to pop in once a month would now flock to them every night just to save on the television bill. They would come over to watch some TV. Or so they would think. Nobody ever watches TV in a bar, unless there is an important game on. Instead of watching, people would start socializing, and that's a good thing. The old community concept would return.

Or, some folks could drop by each other's places and chip in to watch - a game, maybe. Not a movie, though. The idea of broadcasting movies on TV is so obviously archaic, one can't help but wonder why even the current model still includes flicks - what with the proliferation of DVD's and downloadable movie files.

Now suppose you're the chief executive of one of the TV studios. The electronic meters are installed in every TV-owning household; the new law is in effect as of today. You're in charge - your salary and career depend on the success of your studio. What would you do?

First, you would probably have to call a conference. The two dozen most important studio men and women would sit around the long polished table and talk. After about an hour, you would fire every person who has been guilty of saying, "I don't know what we're going to do now. I have no idea where this is going, it's just is terrible." Oldtimers cannot adapt. It has nothing to do with their age - some oldtimers are barely in their twenties. They should only be kept on when no decisions, creative or otherwise, have to be made anymore. You would only need decisive people around you.

Some would jokingly suggest that if the studio were to go on, it would have to look seriously into porn. Fire those too. You don't need folks who make bad jokes, and the joke is certainly a bad one. TV is not meant for porn. DVD players and the Web are meant for porn. Everybody knows that.

You'd ask around, you'd rack your brains for days, and then a moment would come when someone, some hitherto unknown and unnoticed entity, suddenly comes up to you, saying that the one unique feature television has is the live broadcast. DVD players and the Internet manage pre-recorded shows a lot better than television.

That would be your edge. The live broadcast.

Sports - that's a no-brainer. "Here we are live in Phoenix, and the game is just about to begin, folks." What else? News? News go live only in emergencies; otherwise, the Web is far better equipped than TV to deliver news.

What is the one thing out there that is very much like sports and yet not like it at all? What has live action that loses a measure of its value when you only get to watch a recording? Live theatre. Of course. If Hollywood can get millions of people to stand on lines eagerly, hoping to catch that new release, so can theatre.

Live broadcasts. That's the key. Nothing taped, or edited. Real actors performing real shows. Viewers watching and rooting for them, or against them ("She was great tonight, even though she mixed up some of the lines." "They should get rid of that moron, he's no actor." "That theatre should start getting better plays. The actors are too talented to perform the crap I saw last night." Repertory theatres, performing four or five different shows a week, and no performance is like the previous one - what a great idea!

You would need to find a lot of good theatrical performances, though - and besides, since we're talking about live broadcasts, theatres do not perform in the morning, do they?

That depends. Morning in New York is show time in Sydney. Scouts would have to go on the road, following leads, seeking out sensational shows in all kinds of theatres, from historically famous to downright obscure - in order to earn their bread. Theatrical companies would have to clean up their act and start looking for good plays instead of subsidies. "Broadcasting live from Bradley's Playhouse in Austin, Texas!" "A new sensational play by such-and-such, and we're live in Pierre, South Dakota!" "Chicago's New Plush Globe presents this striking new production of an old classic!" "Live this Friday night in Glasgow!"

And so forth.

Studios would have to get used to the idea that very few shows can get them millions of viewers. A boxing match or, for now, a star performer's solo concert - that's about it. Apart from those, only free television can get a hundred thousand or more people to watch a program at the same time - because it's free. Truly commercial television would not be able to do that. Ten thousand viewers per show would have to be considered a success.

Ten thousand? At five or six dollars each? What about the expenses? All that equipment, all those crews? That costs money! Fifty or sixty grand - that's no budget at all.

Yes, it is. There is no reason why, with today's technologies, the size of a studio crew (including the scouts looking for broadcast material) should exceed twenty souls. If the kind of equipment that would make this possible does not yet exist, then it's time someone designed it. Some ten-year-olds out there broadcast from their homes, through the Web, to the entire world these days, for goodness' sake.

But what about all those television employees, the crews of today's studios, the executives, the marketing departments, and on and on? They would have to find other jobs, or perform fellatio.

What about all the equipment and infrastructure already in place? It would have to be scrapped. LP's and 8-tracks were, and no one even noticed.

"Hey, did you catch that play from that Kansas theatre last night? Everybody's talking about it, you know."

"No, I missed it."

"I've got a recording. You want it?"

"It's not the same. Aw, all right. Thanks."

What about the handful of corporations who can still afford to advertise on TV today? They would have to re-introduce themselves to the idea of free enterprise, which is to say they would have to learn how to compete by making their products better than their rivals', that's all: no more television hypnosis, no more substituting colorful mesmerizing ads for hard work and invention. Go ahead and compete. That's the American way, fellow. Either that, or perform fellatio.

Suppose a day came when, despite the scouts' efforts, nothing half-way good could be found to fill in the time slot? What then?

Fall back on sports.

Not enough games!

Oh, come on. That's nonsense. Of course it would be idiotic to show Lithuanian basketball or Cuban baseball in these United States, but what about English, German, Italian and Brazilian soccer? Russian hockey?

I can hear someone, some burly man with a beer belly, saying, "We have our own culture, and Italian soccer isn't part of it. And there aren't enough theatres in the country to fill an entire day of TV programming."

True, but that's because a very large part of our cultural repository is currently clogged with free or semi-free (i.e. subsidized, a.k.a. Socialist) television. As soon as the trash is squared away, this nation's capacity for genuine culture just might surprise the rest of the world. And there would be new theatre companies springing up around the country every week, competing for the scouts' attention.

"I like some of today's shows, and I don't mind the commercials - they give me time to do my bills, take a piss, and get the chocolates."

Get a grip, girlfriend. Or at least get a calendar. The 'Fifties are over, as are the 'Sixties, 'Seventies, 'Eighties, and 'Nineties. All those are over. Done.

The Right To Browse: The Future of Internet Freedom

Right now, as I'm writing this, cyberspace enjoys a freedom not seen anywhere else in the world. On the Internet you can pretty much say anything you want to say and be anyone you want to be. This autonomy can be extremely enlightening but of course, like anything it also comes with a price. For example, I could publish a website tomorrow claiming that the moon is made of cheese. Because there are no checks and balances on Internet publishing the same way there is on say, books, I can publish whatever I want, even if it isn't true. There is also a price in the types of information people have access to. If I were to use a search engine like Google to research a topic of interest, I could just as easily find a website explaining how to build a bomb as I could on how to conserve wildlife in my area. As citizens of the United States, we except the consequences of freedom provided to us by our constitution. Yet as the world moves more towards a global society it's important to note that there are vast differences in the ways that countries view individual freedoms and Internet freedom is no exception. If you are thinking that the Internet will always be as it is now, you may be surprised to learn that there are presently forces in motion that seek to reign in this freedom and potentially change the face of the internet forever.

Although it has gotten little press in the wake of the global recession, the U.N. has started debates around whether or not it should implement some sort of international regulatory system on the Internet. Countries like China and Iran already have nation wide regulations that restrict their citizen's Internet activity. Many developing countries like India, Saudi Arabia and Brazil also have an interest in limiting what websites their people can access but don't, at this time, have the means to do so. Because of this they are asking the U.N. to take a more active roll in policing the Internet. Of course not everyone is on board, The US, it's western allies and civil society groups to name a few. They argue that it would simply take too long to make important decisions and slow down innovations. It's also hard to believe that any sort of consensus on what types of content should be banned could easily be achieved, given that what is deemed "offensive" differs a great deal around the world.

Despite the fact that the US is not on board with U.N. control of the Internet, it does not mean that the future of the Internet is secure domestically. The recent Comcast court decision earlier this year also has the potential to drastically change the Internet, as it exists today. The court case revolved around the Federal Communication Commission telling Comcast it could not slow down it's broadband access to a particular file sharing website called BitTorrent. Comcast did this because on a broadband network, you actually share bandwidth with other customers in your area. This means that the few people in your neighborhood who constantly download movies or large files can literally use up "all the Internet", causing slower connection speeds for everyone else on the same line. Comcast took the F.C.C to court arguing that they did not have the right to tell them how to run their business and won.

As someone who has had a broadband connection and knows how annoying it can be to suddenly loose online access because a neighbor is pirating movies, this all sounds pretty reasonable, until you consider the unintended consequences. Since the ruling has basically stripped the F.C.C.'s power to enforce "Net Neutrality" (the idea that all internet content should be dealt with equally), what is stopping Internet service providers from going to a "pay to play" system in which websites with a greater means to pay will be able to buy faster connection speeds? This would give large, more profitable websites an unfair advantage over smaller often, more relevant websites. Although Comcast has stated that it's not in their best interest to make these sorts of changes, I for one do not have a warm, fuzzy feeling about the implications here. Especially as Comcast merges with NBC, giving them an even larger monopoly on media in this country

Now, to be clear, I don't think that the Internet as we know it is in any immediate danger. One reason is because the Internet is not easy to control. WikiLeaks is a great example of this. Try as they might, the US has not been able to stop access to the whistle blowing website's detrimental content. I do feel however, that it's important to take note of the events happening around the world, and how it can affect Internet independence in the future. I personally believe that while there have been some drawbacks to the "free flow of information" provided to us by the Internet, over all it has been a really good thing and restriction to the Internet by government or big corporations would ultimately be very bad for society as it would hinder human advancement. Remember, as people who pay for Internet access we have a voice! Let's make sure to use it to ensure that future generations don't get stuck with a "watered down" version of the Internet we have today.

The Rule of Law

One of the most fundamental requirements of a civil society is the rule of law which means that the people must follow the law of the land irrespective of his or her status or position in the society. In the modern world, the developed countries feel proud that their society is governed by the rule of law while most developing countries like India feel ashamed that their society does not have the rule of law. The developed countries are the role model for the underdeveloped countries, where the rule of law is still a distant dream.

Societies that follow rule of law are often considered more civilized as there is much more order in the society. Every thing in such societies appears to be in order. The roads are clean, lawns and parks are well-maintained, government officials work in office, trains and public transports run on time. Further, there is virtually no corruption in public offices. People are well paid, deliver better efficiencies and keep everything neat and clean. These societies appear perfect to the people of other parts of the world, who often wonder why they can't be like them.

All societies need laws for their existence. Even though the laws may be different in each society, yet there are some basic principles that are common to all laws of the world. These fundamental principles are equality, fraternity, justice and liberty. The Indian constitution, for example, incorporates these goals in the preamble to the constitution which seeks to secure for all its citizens justice, liberty, equality and to promote among them the spirit of fraternity.

These principles are so universal in nature that they find place in every civilized society of the world. It is matter of great surprise that in reality the outcome of the rule of law is just the opposite. The more civilized a society is, the more is the inequality among its population - more injustice to the have-nots, less liberty due to strict enforcement of law and more hatred among the citizens based on race, caste and religion. What goes wrong in the implementation in the so-called rule of law?

Law of Nature

Indian thinkers in the Vedic period, i.e. around 3000 years before the birth of Christ, discovered that the universe does not perform its functions at random but follows certain laws. These were called "Rita" or the universal laws or principles that guided the universe. The progress of man can be largely attributed in understanding these basic principles of nature and exploiting them for the benefit of the human race at the cost of the rest of the creations. The laws of man, therefore, run contrary to the laws of nature as they are human-centric and not designed for all the creations of God or Nature.

One of the basic differences between man-made-laws and the laws of Nature is that the laws of nature are spontaneous as they require no effort in implementation. For example, in a natural piece of earth like a forest, the earth produces trees, plants, fruits and vegetables spontaneously without any need of watering or breeding. The nature itself provides timely rain and fertilizer to the new plants. The forests and the mountains are covered with greenery and beauty, which is purely natural since it comes without any effort.

On the contrary, the man-made creations like parks, trees, plants are artificially made. They too may look as beautiful as the natural ones, yet they cannot survive without regular effort on the part of man. Imagine a park, which is not maintained for a few months, or a house not cleaned for months. It will lose all its beauty and soon be filled with dust and weeds. No building or modern gadget can survive without external effort from man. However, all natural creations are able to survive on their own and maintain their existence; and enjoy their life without any external support.

The laws of nature are just as they treat every specie (and not only man) with equality. In a jungle, every specie gets its due share of food, air and water which enable them to live a dignified life without being dependent on any other creation. Nature makes no distinction between one specie, and the other as all species are the children of the same God.

However, in the man's world, every other creature is killed if it is not useful for man. They can survive only if they can be useful for man. Thus man's world does not treat any other creature of the nature with respect and does not provide them any right of equality, liberty, justice or fraternity. He cleverly usurps this universal law and makes it applicable only for human beings. For all other lesser species, he has created a man-made-law, calling it 'the law of jungle' or 'the survival of the fittest' which justifies his domination over the weak creations. The fact, on the contrary, is that the laws of jungle are far more just and equal for all species than the man-made-law.

Most men are not concerned about the way they treat the lesser animals as they feel that 'the survival of the fittest' theory is more logical than the laws of nature. However, they forget that every principle created in the universe has to be applied on them also and that they may not always be a beneficiary. Man-made-laws do not stop with animals but they soon spread their wings to encompass human beings, too. This is where conflicts between man and man starts that gives rise to hatred and wars. Man feels the pinch when the law of jungle is applied against them and the law of nature is denied to him. He is hurt when he is treated like weeds by the society.

Weeds: The Undesirable Plants of Nature?

One of the most interesting creations of the natural world is weed. Weeds are undesirable vegetation in the kingdom of plants. Weeds are defined as any plant that is not valued by the human society and usually tends to overgrow or compete with valued flora. Weeds are the plants which are considered by human beings as unattractive, undesirable, or troublesome.

In the natural world, man has to continuously fight against weeds to make their artificial plants survive. Weeds grow automatically and if the artificial gardens do not have the support of man, it is soon overpowered by weeds and the whole field or garden becomes full of weeds. Weeds are created by Nature (God) as no human effort is required to grow them. They are, however, so powerful that man has to continuously guard his creation from these weeds, lest all creation of the civilized society is destroyed. Weeds are as undesirable to man in the world of plants as criminals in the human society.

Criminals: The Necessary Evil for the Civil Society

Similar to weeds in the natural world, there is a growth of criminals in civilized societies. Who these criminals are? Why do they grow? Whether the criminals are healthy people or are they mentally ill as often thought by the civilized world?

Criminals are defined as the people who commit crime. Crime is defined as an act that is a violation of the criminal law that is punishable by law. Crime is usually considered an evil act and criminals are often seen as evil created by Devil, out there to destroy the civilized citizens, the children of God.

There are many similarities between criminals and weeds. Criminals grow automatically in every society and the society has to work hard to weed out these criminals. Criminals like weeds are so powerful and competitive that they have the power to defeat the civilized people. They are, therefore, fought jointly by the society. Yet in every society, there is crime and there are criminals. We are used to look criminals as evil that is unnecessary just like weeds. Yet if God (Nature) is the creator of all, then everything in this world must have been created with a purpose. "What could be the purpose of creation of criminals?" We wonder.

Criminals are, as a matter of fact, creation of the civilized world. In an uncivilized world, there would be no law, so there can be no violation of law and hence, no criminal. If we wish to understand the utility of criminals in the civilized world, we must imagine the world of nature without weeds. In such a world, all plants will have to be grown by man with artificial watering - canals, tube-wells, and other irrigation systems used for agriculture. In all certainty, man will grow only such crops and plants that are useful to man and the rest of the species would surely not survive in the man's world. Further, man's energy is limited and with all his effort, he can hardly take care of a minuscule part of the world by artificial plantation, so the rest of the physical world would be without plants and so without oxygen and other animal life and eco-system. This will soon lead to the end of the world including the human being.

The role of criminals is similar to the role of the weeds. Imagine a world without crime i.e. everyone follows the law of the land without questioning. It will only provide status quo in the world. Kings will always be kings and only their children or loved ones can become kings. Poor will always be poor. Kings will frame more inhuman laws that would give them more powers. The less fortunate people would die out of hunger and poverty as they won't break the law and the state will have no obligation to feed them. Thus the world without criminals would be a place where people will die due to inaction, boredom and cruelty. Such an ideal world, indeed, would be the most inhuman and most undesirable to mankind.

Thankfully, people called criminals automatically grow in every civil society as soon as man creates laws to govern it. The laws of man are always challenged by them since they are mostly against the laws of nature i.e. equality, justice, liberty and fraternity. States always have to face opposition from such people who break the law and are known as criminals. They may have an ugly appearance as weeds but they only provide oxygen to the society for its life. Thus in posterity, people recognize them not as criminals but as heroes.

The Path of Heroism

While man hates criminals, he worships the heroes. He can lay his most valuable possession i.e. his life on a single call from his hero. Who are these heroes? Are they law-abiding civilized people or the law-defying criminals? Take the example of Mahatma Gandhi in the modern world. He was perhaps the biggest criminal in the time of the British rule in India and he was jailed many times on charges of being waging war against the state. He spent more than 15 years in jail for his various crimes. Yet the people of India call him 'Father of the Nation' and love him more than any civilized person on the earth. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in jail, yet he is a national hero not only for South Africa but for the entire world.

In history, we can find numerous examples of great people who have broken the law and having been punished for their criminal acts. The list includes people like Christ, Prophet Mohammad, Socrates and Galileo. Yet it is these people who changed the history of the world and they are rightly worshiped as heroes by the masses even after their death.

How many people you have ever known who have become heroes without breaking the law and committing crimes in their time? Perhaps none. Heroes are created not by following the law but by breaking the law.

Rule of Divine Law

It is not always good to follow the law blindly as it provides order and rule of law in the society but kills the humanity as the implementation of most of the man-made laws are against the natural laws. Man-made laws are often disguised under the cover of natural laws like equality, justice, liberty and fraternity yet they serve just the opposite purpose. Most people see the letter of the law but fail to grasp its spirit. One must understand that breaking man-made laws is one of the fundamental requirements of all civil societies, if it contradicts the natural or divine laws. Thus every person who breaks the law need not be a criminal. One must go deeper into the facts before declaring a law-breaker to be a criminal. The key distinction perhaps would be to see if he is breaking the law for the interest of the humanity or for his own selfish end. Is it need-based or greed-based? There lies the distinction between good and evil, between a true criminal and a hero. One who is breaking a law for others or to fight injustice is a hero and not a criminal. A poet said "Jo lade din ke khet, Sura toi" (One who fights for the weak is the real hero).

Mr. Awdhesh K Singh holds his B. Tech. from Institute of Technology, Bananas Hindu University Varanasi and M. Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The Law and Love

Whenever Christians do something the world doesn't like, self appointed experts begin to complain, saying, true Christianity is not about (fill in the blank) but about love. They complain when Christians abandon warm and fuzzy religiosity and actually do something that makes a difference in the world. They grumble, saying, Christianity does not belong in the market place, but safely behind the four walls of the Church were it won't disrupt the lives of normal people. These "experts" may be found in the Church as well as in the world. What both groups have in common is a lack of understanding concerning true Christian love.

Many people - Christian and non-Christian alike - define love in terms of emotion. Certainly, emotion is often part of the mix, but the fact is, you don't need to feel anything in order to exercise biblical love. In the Bible, love is primarily concerned with our covenant relationship with the Lord. This means one who is in covenant with the Creator fulfills the conditions of the relationship by exercising love. Thus, Jesus said, YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 22:37-40). In other words, everything God ever said about right relationship with him is summed up in these two commandments. It doesn't mean we can throw away the Bible and just "love;" we won't understand what Christ meant by "love" if we do that. These words of Christ remind us that love is first of all a matter obedience.

The Apostle John wrote, By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome (1 John 5:2-3). Keeping the commandments of God is evidence of love toward God and his children. Hence, love is primarily about how we act. It is not enough to say we love the Lord and our neighbor, we must show it. Therefore, true love depends (in part) on a good knowledge of the Bible.

There is no part of life exempt from the expression of love. For instance, part of loving God and our neighbor is to love our immediate family. Nonetheless, this most basic employment of the law is often overlooked and we end up treating those closest to us with the least love. The Bible says we are to lay our life down for others and think of others more highly than our-self. Yet, countless Christian husbands fail to love their wives and children because they neglect to exercise servant leadership.

Moreover, we show love in the local fellowship by following the biblical commands concerning the Church. Pastors love in teaching and admonishing the flock while the congregation shows love in obeying their pastor and supporting him in his ministry (1 Corinthians 9:9-10, Hebrews 13:7, 17).

We are also called to show love to God in the way we engage the world. All of our activities - on the job, in our political involvement, our community service, our recreation - everything must be done as unto the Lord (Colossians 3:17). Indeed, we might say that the Bible is a handbook on how to show love to God and our fellow man; we cannot properly love unless we know the word and obey it.
